About the TV Series

BerniceRomanATS

The Tipping Points of our Climate System, directed by Liz Courtney is a landmark TV series that explores the emerging tipping points that have recently drawn concern from scientific communities worldwide for their fragile and near-crisis state. Presented by climate-journalist Bernice Notenboom, this groundbreaking science/adventure series follows a group of pre-eminent scientists as they venture off the grid to explore the perilous tipping points that are destabilsing our global climate system making it more unpredictable. Produced by Unboxed Media Australia in partnership with VPRO, The Weather Channel and the ARD Group, “The Tipping Points” premiers in the US on the 19th October 2013.
Preview trailer here.

The series explores the global impact of our changing climate system, how climate and human populations interconnect and the profound impact they have on each other. Scientists explore the elements destabilising our climate system and how changes in a remote area can – and do – dramatically impact those thousands of miles away. It proposes we are all connected globally by this intricate system – OUR CLIMATE SYSTEM.

The phenomena of The Tipping Points follows the concept that, at a particular moment in time, a small change can have large, long-term consequences
A “DOMINO EFFECT” on a fragile climate system already in a state of flux. Localised ecological systems are known to shift abruptly and irreversibly from one state to another when they are forced across critical thresholds. Furthermore, when the situation is pushed past the “tipping point”, it will potentially lead to a chain reaction, putting other ecosystems around the globe in peril. The Tipping Points features several of the most critical examples, including the collapse of the Greenland ice sheet, the melt of the Himalayan glaciers, dieback of the Amazon rainforest, rise of Oceans, the rapid melt of the Permafrost in the High Arctic, and Floods and Droughts of Africa.

The Tipping Points not only shows how changes in the climate system are affecting local communities in exotic and distant locales like the Amazon or the Arctic, but also how it this can impact people from North America to Australia, Asia to Europe, and every community in between. The series explores what is happening at the most dramatic tipping points and looks to find answers to understand what can be done to stem the tide of change before we do irreparable damage, and ultimately put our own lives at risk. Seeking solutions – a global plan for sustainability and adaptation is the final message this series leaves with a quote:

“We have all the tools and knowledge to adapt – we just need the WILL OF THE PEOPLE to come together”
Dr. Ben Abbott.
